West Bromwich Albion returned to the top of the Sky Bet Championship table on Monday night, after defeating Preston North End by a goal to nil at Deepdale.

The Baggies were looking to return to top-spot after Leeds United emphatically beat Middlesbrough by four goals to nil on Saturday, and Slaven Bilic's men left it late to do so.

After a quiet game overall, Charlie Austin converted from 12 yards in the 90th minute to secure an invaluable away win for Albion, after Kyle Edwards was adjudged to have been fouled by Declan Rudd.

After another standout display at right-back, Albion's Nathan Ferguson was given the Sky Bet Man of the Match award following another impressive performance.

The homegrown star has gone from strength to strength under Slaven Bilic, since being named as the Man of the Match against Nottingham Forest on the opening day of the campaign.

Can you get 15 out of 15 on this West Brom quiz?

The young full-back took to Instagram to express his delight at the recognition, whilst sporting an ice-pack on his knee after suffering a knock late on - not that he cares, clearly.

West Brom have only lost one game so far this season, and take on promotion contenders Swansea City at The Hawthorns next Sunday.

The Verdict

Ferguson is such a talent, and he just seems to be getting better game by game at the moment.

He has always been impressive going forward, but he is becoming a really mature player and better defensively, dealing really well with the likes of Sean Maguire and Tom Barkhuizen last night.

It is so, so important for West Brom to secure his future as soon as possible, as there has been no movement on the long-term deal they reportedly offered him not too long ago.
