Gareth Barry’s contract extension will surely frustrate West Brom fans.

The former England midfielder’s form in the second half of the season was disappointing, while his antics off the field gave the impression that he was not sufficiently focused on avoiding relegation.

If the Baggies are to thrive next season, Darren Moore will need to force a change of attitude from the 37-year-old.

Barry started the season well, even being named captain against Arsenal as he broke the record for most outfield appearances in the Premier League. Things soon turned sour. Taxigate was followed by a decline in form and a knee injury that ruled him out of the final ten games of the season.

His reputation took a further blow when he was seen in a nightclub the night before a match.

For a club to bounce back into the Premier League, senior players need to step up and take responsibility.

Many clubs have found their attempts to return to the top flight scuppered by the departure of such players. In this regard, it is positive to have retained Barry.

However, the players also have to show the necessary spirit to turn the club around.

Barry’s demeanour is of a player in search of another pay-check rather than a player desperate to do well for the club.

The attitudes of senior players can be infectious.

If Moore can convince Barry to adopt a more positive attitude, he will have a quality player who can inspire the rest of the squad.

If not, the once England captain could prove a millstone around the club’s neck.
