West Bromwich Albion are considering a move for free agent James Collins, according to reliable football journalist Alan Nixon.

Collins is available on a free transfer after he was released by West Ham United at the end of last season.

The veteran defender boasts plenty of experience at the top level, having played 279 Premier League matches.

During his career, the 51-cap Wales international has played for Cardiff City, had two spells at West Ham and a three-year stay at Aston Villa.

Collins could now return to the West Midlands as West Brom ponder a move.

The Baggies have already sold Jonny Evans and expect to lose Ahmed Hegazi and Craig Dawson so they need defensive reinforcements with Kyle Bartley also a target.

Collins, 34, is now considering his options after being let go by West Ham, where he had been for six years in his second spell in East London.

The Verdict

Collins would be an excellent short-term signing on a free transfer for West Brom.

The experienced defender is a model professional, a dedicated man and he always puts his body on the line for the team.

Many West Ham fans were upset to lose him, which speaks volumes about how well he was admired both on and off the pitch.
