West Bromwich Albion are amongst a number of Championship teams considering making a late Deadline Day move for Everton defender Cuco Martina, according to the Football Insider.

The Baggies could be in need of adding to their defensive options, with Nathan Ferguson reportedly potentially heading to Premier League Crystal Palace, which could leave the Baggies a little light of options at right-back, although they do have Darnell Furlong and Dara O’Shea can fill in there.

Martina has not made a single appearance for Everton in all competitions so far this campaign, having found himself behind both Seamus Coleman and Djibril Sidibe in the pecking order at right-back, although the 27-year-old had returned to first team training under Carlo Ancelotti.

The defender spent the first half of last season out on loan with Stoke City in the Championship, and it is thought that Everton would be willing to let the defender leave the club either on loan or on a permanent basis before the window closes.

The verdict

This could be a sensible move for West Brom, with the Baggies potentially in need of adding some cover for Furlong at right-back if they are to lose Ferguson to Crystal Palace before the window closes, and the 27-year-old would add plenty of experience to the squad.

Martina has found life really challenging since he made the move to Everton from Southampton in 2017, with the right-back never fully convincing at Goodison Park, and he found himself completely frozen out of the first team picture under Marco Silva.

The defender’s loan spell at Stoke during the first half of last season saw him somewhat show his potential to make a difference in defence, but he also produced a couple of poor performances which left some questioning his importance to the side.

At this stage in the window and with time running out to replace the potential loss of Ferguson, West Brom could do worse than make a move for Martina, who will you would imagine be full of enthusiasm to impress at a new club.
