West Brom will be targeting free agents and Premier League loan deals this summer, according to The Athletic.

The likes of John Swift and Jed Wallace are seen as attainable targets that could be signed this summer.

The Reading and Millwall attackers are both out of contract at their respective clubs this summer and are open to a move.

Tom Lawrence and Joe Rothwell are also seen as potential targets for a move this summer.

However, Swift and Wallace are the top priority additions that Steve Bruce wants to bring to the Hawthorns.

Elsewhere, the Baggies will also be aiming to sign young and exciting talent from Premier League sides.

The loan market is seen as an area that West Brom can exploit to improve the squad with the aim being to push for promotion back to the top flight under the 61-year old.

This is a clear change in transfer strategy under new CEO Ron Gourlay, who was appointed to the position in early February of this year.

This will be the first transfer window for both Gourlay and Bruce at the club, which will give both a chance to implant their vision for West Brom into the shaping of the first team.

The Verdict

The free agent market is filled with exciting talent who are out of contract this summer, so it is an area West Brom need to be exploring.

Adding two or three top Championship talents as free agents could be a big boon for the club, who should be able to attract the biggest names.

The loan market is also filled with promising young talent, but should be used to pad out the squad more so than improving the starting lineup.

This change in strategy will be an interesting approach from West Brom and perhaps shows lessons have been learned on splashing the cash on big-name signings that ultimately underwhelm fans.
