Sheffield United forward Callum Robinson is having a medical with West Brom this afternoon as he closes in on a switch to The Hawthorns.

The 24-year-old only joined the Blades in the summer after impressing in the Championship with Preston over the years but he has struggled to make a positive impact in the Premier League.

With David McGoldrick, Billy Sharp, Oli McBurnie and Lys Mousset to pick from, competition for places is fierce under Chris Wilder and it appears he is ready to sanction Robinson's departure.

That's after The Athletic confirmed a medical is taking place this afternoon and it is expected to be finalised before the deadline, with the Ireland international joining on loan for the remainder of the season.

Interestingly, they also state that this will purely be a temporary switch, with the two clubs not including an option or an obligation for a future purchase as part of the agreement.

Slaven Bilic's league leaders are in action against Cardiff tonight so Robinson could make his debut against Luton on Saturday if this goes through as expected.

The verdict

This is good news for West Brom as it shows that a deal is very close and it's clear that the former Aston Villa man would add a lot to the team with the qualities he has.

News of this transfer has developed quickly over the past few days and it now does seem a matter of time before it's complete.

The only surprising aspect is that there's no option for a permanent deal in the summer as if Robinson's goals help Albion to the top-flight you would imagine they would want to keep him.

In the short-term though, it's a good deal for Bilic and the player is getting the regular football he wants.
