It could be a busy month in the goalkeeping department for West Brom, with The Athletic reporting that there could be plenty of shuffling round of personnel as the weeks go by,

Right now, the club's undisputed number one choice in-between the sticks is Sam Johnstone. The former Man United man has been impressive for the club in both the Premier League and Championship and it has even led to him being given the nod on the national stage for England too.

These showings have already caught the eye of those higher up the football pyramid and it is likely he could seek a move to the top flight when his current deal runs out at the end of the season.

That would mean the Baggies need another keeper to step up in his absence - and that leads to a question of whether they would turn to a player already at the club.

It could be Alex Palmer but the 25-year-old hasn't been able to get any gametime this season. Previously though he has shone for both Lincoln and Plymouth and the signs are there that he could be a capable stand-in.

This report though claims that Valerien Ismael may want him getting some action if he is to eventually replace Sam Johnstone - and if he is sent away this month, that could then cause a domino effect.

That's because another goalkeeper at the side in Josh Griffiths may end up being recalled so that he is available as backup.

It's a situation that is certainly up in the air and might mean we see a change in the goalkeeping personnel available at the Hawthorns in the next few weeks. It may only become clearer when movements do start to happen though in terms of the future of Johnstone.

The Verdict

West Brom are probably resigned to losing Sam Johnstone at this point, so they'll have to consider who they can use as a stand-in for him.

He might not move now but they have to consider the chance that he will. If that is the case, they'll also have to consider whether it is worth sending out any of their other shot-stoppers on loan or recalling them.

It's all up in the air right now and likely to remains so until Johnstone either commits his future to the Baggies or decides to part ways with the club. Once his future is clear, the club can more easily sort out whether they want to replace him from within or search for a new goalkeeper.

That might not happen until the summer - and it means that they may indeed send some players out on short-term deals for the time being whilst they still have Johnstone in their ranks.
