West Bromwich Albion are rivalling Swansea City in the race to sign Tom James from Yeovil Town this summer.

According to Football Insider, the Sky Bet Championship duo have both made enquiries about James, as they look to bolster their defensive options ahead of the new season.

It’s reported that Swansea are leading the chase to sign James, but West Brom are ready to firm up their interest in the 22-year-old.

James has impressed for Yeovil since joining them from Cardiff City 18 months ago, making 54 appearances.

51 of those appearances came last season, with James featuring across the back four, as his versatility shone through.

James scored one goal last season for the League Two outfit, with that coming in the Football League Trophy back in November.

The 22-year-old was on target against Plymouth Argyle in a 2-1 victory.

During the 2013/14 campaign, James featured on one occasion in the Premier League, stepping off the bench for Cardiff against Chelsea for the final minutes.

Both West Brom and Swansea are embarking on a return to the Championship, with the new season beginning this weekend.

The Verdict

James’ reputation is rising in the lower leagues, with the 22-year-old putting in some impressive performances for Yeovil.

Both West Brom and Swansea are keen to strengthen and could give James a step back up the footballing ladder.

There would be doubt surrounding the big jump he would have to make, but both West Brom and Swansea are likely to back their instinct.
