West Bromwich Albion and Burnley both want to sign Middlesbrough striker Britt Assombalonga, according to The Sun.

Burnley have turned their attention to Assombalonga after failing with a £16m move for West Brom striker Jay Rodriguez.

But they face competition from West Brom for Assombalonga, whose future at Middlesbrough is uncertain after a training ground bust-up with Tony Pulis.

The 25-year-old scored 15 league goals for Middlesbrough last season and netted 30 goals in 69 games for Nottingham Forest prior to that.

The DR Congo international has been identified as a proven second tier goal grabber by the Baggies, who are planning for the possibility of losing one or both of their strikers.

Rodriguez, 29, scored 11 goals for the club last season but is a Premier League target, while Salomon Rondon has been on Newcastle United's radar.

Burnley also want Assombalonga to bolster their attack for the Europa League while Boro have already lost Patrick Bamford this summer so may be light up front.

The Verdict

If either Rondon or Rodriguez leave, Assombalonga would be an excellent acquisition.

He has plenty of Championship experience and is a proven goal scorer at this level.

Plus, at the age of 25, he is still improving and he could end the year among the top scorers in the league.
