Stevenage defender Ben Wilmot is now a target for West Bromwich Albion, according to The Mirror.

West Brom have joined the Premier League big boys in a multi club scrap for the young Stevenage defender.

Despite playing just a handful of senior games for Stevenage, Wilmot is being chased by a host of Premier League clubs with Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Southampton also interested in his services.

Stevenage seem resigned to his sale but they will hold out for £1m for the talented teenager.

The 18-year-old has played a total of six matches in all competitions after making his first team breakthrough for Stevenage this term.

He has recently featured in their last three matches, including two FA Cup ties against Reading, as Premier League clubs continue to monitor his progress ahead of a move.

Reports last week suggested Tottenham Hotspur had beaten off the competition and wrapped a deal up for Wilmot.

But, according to The Independent, Spurs did not have a deal in place and Liverpool were hoping to beat the North London side to his signature.

Now West Brom are interested as they look for a long term replacement for Jonny Evans, who is expected to be the subject of many bids this month.

The Verdict

Ben Wilmot is not ready to be Jonny Evans' immediate replacement. But if West Brom are looking for a future star, the 18-year-old could be the ideal candidate. Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool are desperate to sign him so the Baggies could make a statement by beating the Premier League big boys to his signature.
