West Bromwich Albion manager Darren Moore is set to offer a short-term deal to playmaker Giles Barnes, according to reports from The Sun on Sunday (20/01, page 63).

The 30-year old has recently been training with the Baggies over in Dubai during a mid-season training camp, and is said to have impressed his former team-mate, who he played with at Derby County over 10 years ago.

The Jamaican international is no stranger to the Hawthorns faithful, having made 23 appearances for the West Midlands club during a one-year stint with the Baggies between 2010 and 2011.

But the playmaker has since gone on to make over 150 appearances in the MLS for Houston Dynamo and Vancouver Whitecaps, and has been a free agent ever since his departure from Colorado Rapids in the summer.

The Baggies had recently been rocked with the news surrounding another 'Barnes', with talisman Harvey returning to parent club Leicester City after a hugely impressive season for Albion - Darren Moore's men are now short in their midfield options and are looking to bolster their squad ahead of a promotion push.

Moore's men currently sit 4th in the Sky Bet Championship table, six points off the automatic promotion places ahead of a clash with Bolton Wanderers on Monday night.

The Verdict

This is a deal that is likely to divide West Brom fans.

A deal until the end of the season cannot hurt anyone, as Albion are in need of strength in depth in their attacking midfield options.

He may be ageing, but Barnes still has real quality that could really help the Baggies.
