Preston North End boss Alex Neil is the preferred candidate to succeed Darren Moore as manager of  West Bromwich Albion, according to the Daily Mail.

Moore was sacked last month with the Baggies fourth in the Championship table, nine points off the automatic promotion places.

James Shan has won all three of his matches in caretaker charge and is expected to remain in charge until the end of the season.

However, this latest report suggests that Neil is the preferred option to succeed Moore on a long-term basis due to what he has been able to achieve at Preston on a limited budget.

Neil, 37, guided Preston to within two points of the Championship play-offs during his first season in charge and saw his side lose for the first time in 13 matches at the weekend.

He also achieved promotion from the Championship via the play-offs with Norwich City in 2015 and has experience managing in the Premier League.

Former Watford and Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic is also thought to be an option for West Brom.

The Verdict

There's no denying that Shan has done a brilliant job as caretaker manager, winning his three matches in caretaker charge.

However, the club will probably look for someone with more experience, especially if they win promotion this season, and Neil could be a good option for the Baggies.

The former Norwich boss has done remarkably well at Preston and deserves credit for what he has been able to achieve with the club on a limited budget.
