West Bromwich Albion's ambitious attempt to land Dwight Gayle on loan has been unsurprisingly turned down by Newcastle United, according to The Chronicle.

The Baggies were hoping to sign Gayle on a season-long loan deal but Rafa Benitez is unwilling to lose one of his strikers on a temporary arrangement.

Newcastle are actually looking to bring in their own striker with West Brom's Salomon Rondon emerging as a key target and West Brom had hoped to sign Gayle on loan as part of this deal.

Gayle is a proven Championship goal scorer as he netted 23 goals in 34 games for the Magpies to fire them to the 2016/17 title in the second tier.

The 28-year-old scored six times for Newcastle last season but Benitez still wants him to play a part in his squad for next term.

The Verdict

West Brom should try to bring in Gayle permanently as part of the deal which sees Rondon head to St James' Park.

This move would work for all parties as West Brom would get a proven Championship striker to lead the line and Benitez would get his physical centre-forward that he wants.

If the Baggies could somehow land Gayle, then they would surely be right up there among the title favourites.
