West Bromwich Albion are keen to tie James Morrison down to a new contract if he can prove his fitness to manager Darren Moore, The Express and Star reports.

Morrison is out of contract this summer and his former club Middlesbrough are eyeing a swoop on a free transfer.

Boro are hoping to bring the 32-year-old back to The Riverside Stadium, where he started his career in the early 2000s after graduating through the academy.

It would also be a reunion with former West Brom manager Tony Pulis and Boro were hoping to bring back their former schoolboy to add to his 98 appearances for the North East club.

But West Brom could offer him a new deal yet to extend his 11 seasons of service at The Hawthorns.

Morrison is currently the longest serving player at the club, joining one week before Chris Brunt, but he needs to prove his fitness before Moore rewards him with a new deal.

The 46-cap Scotland international spent most of last year out with a serious Achilles injury and he would need to take a big pay cut on his current £60k-per-week wages.

If Morrison proves to Moore that he can get match fit during pre-season, he will be rewarded with a new deal.

The Verdict

If he stays fit all season, Morrison would be a huge asset to either West Brom or Middlesbrough in the Championship.

His experience would be invaluable - he has 311 Premier League appearances and more than 30 goals and 30 assists to his name in the top flight.

At Championship level, a fit Morrison would stand out and be a key player for any promotion challenging side.
