Some speculation this week has suggested that West Brom caretaker boss James Shan is set to be given the job on a more permanent basis.

The caretaker manager will remain in charge for the next week or so at least, with him set to be in the dugout for the Birmingham game next Friday.

Albion are taking it game by game at the moment, but Shan has made a positive impression on club bosses so far.

Despite this, though, I think appointing Shan would be the wrong decision and a stagnant step.

Darren Moore was appointed under similar circumstances, so appointing Shan would just be very much the same mistake.

Moore did a good job but was sacked, seemingly in search of a manager with more experience and more of a tactical plan.

It seems pointless to sack Moore if the Baggies are to just give Shan the job full time.

West Brom may well still be promoted, in which circumstances James Shan may well deserve the job, but it would be a strange one to say the least.

Albion have a game against Birmingham next Friday, in which they could make a huge step to confirming their play-off place.

Whether they can win the play-offs is another question - you would fancy them, but with this managerial uncertainty, it may distract them.

Whatever happens, Shan is evidently a good manager, but it feels a very stagnant step and makes the Moore dismissal look fairly weird - the same mistakes cannot be made again.
