West Brom striker Dwight Gayle has compared the first of his two goals against Stoke City to that scored by Spanish great Andres Iniesta in Japan, report the club's official website.

The on-loan Newcastle United man turned brilliantly when receiving Kieran Gibbs' pass on the edge of the Potters' box to take out two defenders before rounding Jack Butland to open the scoring.

"Just from the way I took it, it’s probably up there with my best, it’s my favourite one I’d have to say," Gayle told the official West Brom website.

"Me and my mate were talking about Iniesta’s goal a few weeks ago and saying how good it was. The touch was similar to what he did and he took on the goalkeeper so you might say it’s similar but I wouldn’t say it was as good."

It was a big win for the Baggies and saw them climb to eighth in the table whilst their opponents remain in an underwhelming 17th position.

Gayle opened the scoring on the 16th minute with his best Iniesta impression and doubled his and the Baggies' tally just before the hour.

A long ball over the top from Livermore was too tempting for the former Peterborough United and Crystal Palace man who rifled it home on the half-volley, catching Butland out at his near post.

Benik Afobe missed a penalty after Livermore had handled on the line before Erik Pieters rifled home a brilliant consolation but it was too little too late for Gary Rowett's side.

The verdict

Gayle had already been impressing for Darren Moore's side but this felt like a real statement of a performance from the striker.

Two brilliantly taken goals but two very different goals that show the full repertoire of the striker and what a threat he will be this season.

His partnership with Jay Rodriguez is one of the best in the Football League already and it looks set to continue to deliver for the Baggies.
