West Brom forward Jay Rodriguez has admitted that Albion were extremely fortunate that the stoppage time equaliser he scored against Aston Villa last night was allowed to stand.

The former Southampton man got his tenth goal of the season as he bundled home against Villa last night, although replays show he clearly handled the ball over the line.

Despite that, it wasn't spotted by the officials and even though Rodriguez looked concerned it would be disallowed, the goal stood.

And, in a refreshingly honest interview with the Express & Star, the 29-year-old acknowledged the Baggies were lucky.

"The ball's landed, it's just how my hands fell. It's obviously luckily gone in, the referee has not seen it. It has hit my hand but sometimes you get that luck, sometimes you don't."

The point ensures Albion stay third, although they could potentially drop out of the play-off positions if results go against them later on this afternoon.

As well as that, Leeds United, currently second, could open up a six-point gap on Moore's side if they beat QPR at home.

The Verdict

This is good from Rodriguez, although it would be hard to deny he had handled it after everyone had seen it.

Nevertheless, it's clear that he didn't mean it but it clearly was a big slice of luck for Albion who probably deserved to lose on the balance of chances.

Now it's about building on that and the Baggies will now concentrate on another huge game on Friday as they travel to Sheffield United.
