West Brom keeper Sam Johnstone has claimed that the Baggies have one of the strongest squads in the Championship as they hunt a return to the Premier League.
The Express and Star reports that the former Manchester United keeper is in a positive mood right now, building up his side’s chance of playing top flight football next season with a confident statement.
He knows exactly what is required to make the grade having been with Aston Villa last season as they narrowly missed out on a top two place. He’s confident that Darren Moore’s side have exactly what is needed to go all the way.
“We are pleased with our form and I still believe we have one of the strongest squads in the Championship,” he said.
“Promotion is still the target and that’s all we’re thinking about as a group of players. I believe we have the quality and we just need to keep plugging away.”
The Baggies have slipped to fifth in a competitive division, with the top two pulling away from the chasing pack. They’re still well placed for a promotion challenge though and with many games still to play, fans at the Hawthorns must believe they’re on the right track.
25-year-old Johnstone spent seven years at Old Trafford, enjoying no fewer than ten different loan spells with seven different clubs before a £6.5m move to the Hawthorns in the summer.
Johnstone was an excellent summer buy and the keeper woes at Leeds, Villa and Forest prove what a big advantage having a top keeper is. Sheffield United were another side who bagged a good one, Dean Henderson being a key figure in their rise up the table.
As for West Brom’s squad, it is strong but there are holes in it that need filling, quickly. There are too many ageing players and not quite enough strength at the back for them to mount a serious top two challenge right now.
