Sky Bet Championship side West Bromwich Albion are interested in signing Albanian defender Ivan Balliu on a free transfer, according to reports from Spanish media outlet AS.
The Baggies are in the market for a new right-back, with Allan Nyom set to complete a long-awaited Hawthorns departure and sign for Getafe.
The 31-year-old made just two appearances for the Baggies last season, before being sent out on loan to Leganes for the season, and another move to Spain looks set to be in the offing for the defender.
Now, it is claimed by AS that West Brom are eyeing up a move for Balliu as Nyom’s replacement – the 27-year-old is currently a free agent, having been released by Metz at the end of last season.
The right-back made just shy of 60 appearances for the French club, and came through the youth ranks at Barcelona B, as well as enduring a three-year spell with Arouca.
Real Valladolid, Leganes and Espanyol are also said to be interested in the Albanian, with West Brom also believed to be keen on the defender.
Slaven Bilic has made just one signing thus far this summer, with Filip Krovinovic arriving on a season-long loan deal from Benfica.
West Brom definitely need to add competition to their right-back position, and Balliu would certainly strengthen what is currently a weak position, with Mason Holgate returning to Everton and Allan Nyom going to Getafe.
Balliu is a player who clearly has decent pedigree having coming through the ranks at Barcelona, and on a free transfer, it’s definitely worth a punt.
Bilic is likely to have many contracts all over Europe, and he will be looking to use these to full effect this summer.
