Aston Villa host West Brom this weekend, in their first-leg of their play-0ff semi-final in what is certain to be a closely-fought battle between the two Championship heavyweights.

This will be the third time that the two sides have faced off this season, with the Baggies coming out on top on one occasion.

We look at the statistics between their head-to-head records in today's play-off duels.

In the first game between the two sides in this year's campaign, the points were shared in a thrilling 2-2 draw at the Hawthorns in December.

Anwar El Ghazi opened the scoring on the day, before Dwight Gayle equalised soon after. But that Aston Villa lead was restored with El Ghazi netting his second of the game.

But the Baggies responded yet again as Jay Rodriguez netted an injury-time equaliser to see the points shared on the day.

In the reverse fixture at Villa Park just two months later, the Baggies ran out deserved winners as they beat Dean Smith's side 2-0.

First-half goals from Hal Robson-Kanu and Jay Rodriguez proved to be enough for West Brom as they strengthened their grip on a play-off spot.

At the time, it looked unlikely that Dean Smith's side were going to have enough about them to force their way into the top six, but a remarkable run of form has seen them finish occupying one of the play-off places and some see them as the favourites to go up.

The Villa boss will be hoping that his side can build on these impressive showings when they host the Baggies at the weekend, in what is certain to be a closely-fought battle at Villa Park.

A win for either side would go a long way in deciding who will book their place in the Championship play-off final at Wembley later this month.
