Former West Brom defender Ally Robertson has heaped praise on Albion's Matheus Pereira and compared him to Ireland legend Johnny Giles.

The on-loan Sporting Lisbon man has made an instant impact in English football, establishing himself as a crucial player for Slaven Bilic's side and his form has been key to the Baggies fast start.

And, Robertson, who made over 500 appearances for West Brom, made a bold claim about the 23-year-old when speaking to the Express & Star.

"For me, he has been our best player this season. He is a wonderfully gifted footballer and reminds me a lot of Johnny Giles – they are very similar.

"Pereira – like Giles – has excellent technical ability. He also has a wonderful eye for a pass. He seems to be playing one-step ahead of everyone else, and it’s that intelligence that allows him to make things happen."

The Brazilian has chipped in with two goals and five assists in the opening months, with his overall contribution to the team clear to see.

Pereira is sure to start when the Baggies are back in action at Middlesbrough next week.

The verdict

This is high praise indeed for Pereira and you have to say he deserves all the plaudits coming his way.

He has settled into the club really well and the expansive style of play that Bilic demands is ideal for the way he plays and he is the one who makes things happen in the final third.

Albion will be desperate to sign him permanently when the window opens and he is going to be key to their promotion push.
