West Brom have had an indifferent 21st century that has seen them unable to really stake a claim as a traditional Premier League club.

The Baggies fluctuated between the first and second tiers of English football for the best part of the first decade of the century - they were too good for the Championship, but seemingly not ready for the Premier League.

In the last five or so years, however, West Brom started to establish themselves as a standard mid-table side and achieved some high finishes under Roy Hodgson.

Sadly, Baggies were relegated last season and it looks like they'll be forced to fight their way back to the top tier once again.

Part of the reason for their decline has been inept signings in the transfer market.

Some players have come through the door for big fees and have failed to live up to the standard expected.

Here, we look at the biggest flops in West Brom’s recent history.

Probably the biggest flop of West Brom’s recent history - Nicolas Anelka’s time at the club was awful.

World Cup and Champions League winner Anelka arrived at the club towards the end of his career, but his track record seemed to get before him.

He looked arrogant and the club needed the opposite of what Anelka brought, so left after just 12 games, one of those was where he performed his quenelle gestur,e which will sum up his forgettable tenure at the Hawthorns.

Diego Lugano was signed by West Brom in the Premier League and the deal raised eyebrows of a number of neutral fans.

The Uruguayan defender was widely considered as a player of far better than West Brom’s standard, so the Baggies had seemingly got a great deal.

It didn’t work out for Lugano at the Hawthorns, and will have to go down as one of the worst signings in their history.

Andy Townsend was a marquee signing for West Brom at the time – he was a big name brought to the club, but quickly people started to realise the signing was a waste.

Townsend epitomized West Brom of this time.
