West Bromwich Albion left it late to seal the deadline day signing of attacking threat Jacob Murphy from Newcastle United.

The 23-year-old is proven at Championship level having plied his trade at Norwich City before a move to the Magpies, scoring nine times and providing six assists.

And his signing should leave the Baggies support with a jubilant feeling at getting a loan deal such as this over the line.

Now, we all know it’s not Harvey Barnes - but it isn’t a bad alternative.

Having had three starts for Rafa Benitez’s side he could well be thrust into the thick of it at the Hawthorns for the rest of the season with space opening up in the team with the departure of Bakary Sako, too.

Murphy plays predominantly on the left-hand side, but with a place in the left of a three or in the number ten role available, expect the Newcastle man to be a key player for Darren Moore’s side.

This is a deal that needs to excite to the Baggies supporters; it should soften the blow of losing Barnes in the process.

The 23-year-old is adept at long shorts and running with the ball, and will add more crosses, more cut-ins for efforts on goal, short, sharp passing and a direct style to a West Brom side that has lacked that since Barnes’ departure.

He is the right age and has a point to prove after a disappointing start to the new campaign on a personal level.

For Norwich, in the Championship, he averaged 2.4 shots per game and 1.2 key passes per game, too.

He has the ability to excite the fans with his attacking flair, and it is something that the West Brom fans must be looking forward to and need to be content with.

It might not be the most spectacular of deals, but it is on that certainly needs to leave them an abundance of anticipation to finally see him in action after the latest of confirmations to this loan signing.
