West Brom are interested in bringing Dwight Gayle back to the club in January, although they face a battle to agree a deal with Newcastle United.

That's according to Chronicle Live, who revealed that Albion are preparing a loan offer for the 29-year-old in the New Year.

However, they state that Steve Bruce's lack of options up top mean it's unlikely that the Premier League side will sanction a deal for the striker.

Injuries have restricted Gayle to just two appearances in the league this season, with both of those very brief outings from the bench in recent weeks.

Joelinton is the current first-choice for the Magpies up top, with the injury-prone Andy Carroll the other senior option for Bruce.

If Albion could finalise a deal for Gayle they would be landing a player who has proven himself in the Championship and one that the fans know well.

The ex-Crystal Palace man weighed in with 24 goals for the Baggies last season as they reached the play-offs but ultimately failed to win promotion.

The verdict

With Charlie Austin and Kenneth Zohore struggling for form this season, Albion could do with a more prolific number nine and Gayle has shown over the years that he guarantees goals at this level.

So, he would be an outstanding signing if they could pull it off and many would make Slaven Bilic's side as strong favourites for the title if he joined.

But, the report suggests that a move is unlikely due to Newcastle and you have to understand that, meaning that Albion may have to look elsewhere but the fans will be pleased the club are looking ahead to potential deals.
