James Morrison is wanted by Middlesbrough, Blackburn Rovers and Derby County, according to Sky Sports News.

Morrison is officially a free agent after his contract with West Bromwich Albion expired at the end of June but he remains in training with the club as he tries to earn himself a new deal there.

West Brom manager Darren Moore rates the Scotland international highly but is waiting to run the rule over his fitness before making a decision on whether to offer him a new deal.

Morrison only managed six outings last season and suffered a long-term injury, but he is now stepping up his rehabilitation and trying to prove that he is fit enough for a new contract at The Hawthorns.

But West Brom's hesitancy to reward the long-serving midfielder - who has spent 11 years with the club - with an extension has alerted a trio of Championship clubs.

Middlesbrough, who are managed by former Baggies boss Tony Pulis, are interested in re-signing their former academy product, who played 98 games for Boro before his 2007 switch to West Brom.

They face competition from Frank Lampard's Derby and former West Brom manager Tony Mowbray's Blackburn.

The Verdict

I understand that Moore would be hesitant to give Morrison a new deal if he is not fully fit but he needs to act quickly otherwise other clubs will pounce.

The versatile midfield man would be an excellent, experienced player to have in the Championship.

The 32-year-old is a model professional with a commendable attitude and he would be an asset for any of these clubs - if he can remain fit.
