West Brom eyeing signing that suggests they know Championship football is on the way

Fulham are facing stiff competition from West Bromwich Albion in their pursuit of Preston North End defender Greg Cunningham.

HITC report that the sides are set to battle it out for the 27-year old who has impressed this season as Preston have pushed for a play-off spot.

Cunningham, a former Manchester City youngster, is entering the final year of his contract and as yet, there’s no new deal on the table.

Fulham are facing up to the possibility of losing left-sided player Ryan Sessegnon, with the report suggesting that Eire defender Cunningham fits the bill as his replacement.

Cunningham had a spell as captain at Deepdale earlier in the season, but made his name at Ashton Gate with Bristol City. He left in 2015 to join Simon Grayson at Preston, which is where he’s been ever since.

He’s equally as comfortable at left back or centre back, offering the sort of versatility in defence that makes him an attractive purchase. With West Brom facing certain relegation, it could be a straight fight between the two clubs for his signature, with the report suggesting Preston are bracing themselves for a summer bid.

The Verdict

Having come from Manchester City, it is likely that Cunningham wants another crack at the top flight and with the greatest of respect to Preston, they don’t look in a position to deliver it.

It’s likely they will want to cash in over the summer, especially if they think he’s not interested in a new deal. That would leave him open to a big move, with the destination depending on where the pursuing clubs are at the end of the season.
