James Shan’s time in caretaker charge of West Bromwich Albion looks as if it is set to be extended, with reports the hierarchy at the Hawthorns will allow him to add to the coaching staff.

This is according to the Express and Star, and if they are to be believed, the current man at the helm of the Baggies will get the chance to bring in two new faces to his backroom team to help him out.

This will fuel speculation even more that his role at the club will continue until the end of the season, with the board aiming to find the right way to see out the current campaign.

Shan has overseen three wins from three games since taking over from Darren Moore last month, equalling their best run of victories this season.

Adding coaching staff seems to suggest his stay in charge of the first-team is set to be prolonged with but seven matches left to play.

Chief executive Mark Jenkins and technical director Luke Dowling are due to meet with Shan early in the week to discuss making additions to his team, the Express and Start have also reported.

And they go on to add that Shan will be offered the chance to appoint two new faces to his backroom staff with a view to remaining in charge until the end of the season with Michael Appleton, Craig Shakespeare, Steven Reid and Kevin Phillips all said to be under consideration.

The verdict

This is the right move by West Brom to keep Shan in charge if what is reported rings true.

Adding some experience to the backroom staff for the final run-in will help Shan, especially as their season seems as if it will be extended via the play-offs.

The Baggies could still make second if they continue their winning run and Leeds and Sheffield United ahead of them slip up a couple of times before now and May.

But this all seems to be positive news despite the situation at the club after the sacking of Moore.
