West Brom could make a move for Martin Cranie as Darren Moore looks to beef up his squad despite the window closing.
Albion were clearly chasing a right-back before the 5pm deadline.
They lodged a bid for Rangers full-back James Tavernier, so it’s clearly an area of weakness in Moore’s mind, even though they managed to keep hold of wantaway defender Craig Dawson.
However, deals for those players won’t happen now but Birmingham Live have revealed they could turn to free agent Martin Cranie, who has featured for the Baggies during pre-season.
The 31-year-old is out of contract after he was released by Middlesbrough in the summer so Albion don’t have to rush to finalise a deal for the versatile defender.
Cranie has spent most of his career in the second-tier, playing for Coventry, Barnsley and Huddersfield among others, winning promotion with the latter two years ago before moving on to Boro.
This would be a sensible signing for West Brom as Cranie is an experienced player that can fill in several positions.
With Dawson staying, Albion aren’t desperate for defenders but they could still do with cover.
Cranie provides that, knows the league and has won promotion to the top-flight before. A short-term deal would appear to suit all parties and ensure Moore has no worries about his defence this season.
