West Bromwich Albion have sold goalkeeper Ben Foster to Watford, the club's official website has confirmed.

Foster had been with West Brom for seven years but he now returns to Watford for an undisclosed fee.

The 35-year-old moves back to the Premier League despite giving his assurances that he would remain at West Brom despite their relegation.

In order to force through the move, he skipped pre-season training in Portugal alongside Craig Dawson - a decision which saw them both disciplined by the club.

Foster played 223 games for West Brom in all competitions after signing a permanent deal in 2012 following a successful loan stint from Birmingham City.

The former Manchester United stopper returns to Watford after spending two loan spells at the club.

But the Baggies have moved quickly to secure his replacement as they signed Man United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, 25, earlier in the week in anticipation that Foster would move on.

The former England under-21 international had been with Aston Villa on loan for the last 18 months and established himself as one of the top keepers in the division.

The Verdict

I can understand why West Brom fans will be upset with this as Foster went back on his words, betrayed their trust and acted in a completely unprofessional manner to force this move through.

But they need to look at the bigger picture and think that they have already sorted his replacement - someone who could easily become more of a club legend than Foster was.

Johnstone is 10 years younger and has proven himself to be a top Championship goalkeeper so they can expect years of good service out of him, both in the Championship and if they go back up to the Premier League.
