West Bromwich Albion are closing in on a summer deal to sign Alex Mowatt, according to John Percy of The Telegraph.
Mowatt will be the Baggies first signing since suffering relegation from the Premier League and could be a real signal of intent as they prepare for the new season in the Championship.
The 26-year-old is a familiar face for new West Brom head coach Valerien Ismael after being his captain during their time together at Barnsley – a spell where the duo almost achieved something remarkable about taking the Tykes into a surprise play-off position at the end of last term.
Mowatt enjoyed a strong season on an individual level as well after scoring eight goals and creating seven more from central midfield, however with the player due to be out of contract at the end of June there was always doubt around his future at the club.
As per Percy, there’s not only interest from Ismael’s new side but it seems that a deal is on the right track to being completed by the weekend.

Taking to Twitter, Percy said: “West Bromwich Albion transfer news: New head coach Valérien Ismaël is close to making Barnsley midfielder Alex Mowatt his first signing.

This could be a cracking signing for West Bromwich Albion.
Alex Mowatt was one of last season’s star performers in the Championship and was a real shining light in Valerien Ismael’s Barnsley side.
The 26-year-old was clearly highly-rated by the Frenchman and that is why he’s looking to bring the midfielder to the Hawthorns ahead of the new season – because of his technical skills, but also his leadership as Barnsley’s captain.
I expect this deal to be an absolute bargain and I think that West Brom fans will be very happy with this.
