A swap deal involving West Bromwich Albion and Newcastle United is close, according to reliable freelance journalist Pete O'Rourke.

On Twitter, he confirmed that a move which would see Dwight Gayle head to The Hawthorns and Salomon Rondon go the other way is close.

Gayle is a proven Championship goal scorer, having netted 23 times in the 2016/17 season to win the golden boot and send Newcastle back to the Premier League.

But last term, the 28-year-old scored just six times and he could be surplus to requirements, especially if Rondon arrives.

Rafa Benitez is interested by the Venuezela international, who scored seven league goals last season and 10 in all competitions.

Despite the powerful striker's goals, West Brom were relegated and he is attracted interest from the top flight.

But with the Magpies unwilling to spend big money on Rondon, they are hoping to use Gayle as a makeweight and this deal is reportedly close to completion.

The Verdict

It would be a real statement of intent if this deal goes ahead and Jay Rodriguez stays.

With Gayle and Rodriguez up front, West Brom could potentially have two strikers capable of hitting 20 goals in a season at this level.

Gayle's fox-in-the-box poacher style would suit West Brom too, so it is a no-brainer.
