West Bromwich Albion are benefitting from the loan deal that saw Dwight Gayle head to the Hawthorns and Salomon Rondon move in the opposite direction to Newcastle United.

It looked like a good deal for everyone on paper, with Gayle a player who has previously impressed in the Sky Bet Championship. And, it’s working out that way, with the 28-year-old scoring 10 goals in only 19 appearances for Darren Moore’s men.

Likewise, Rondon is proving to be a hit in the North East, with his powerful No.9 performances typifying what the St James’ Park faithful want from a striker.

According to the Express and Star, there’s a possibility that Newcastle might move to sign Rondon permanently in the winter window, but West Brom are going to stand firm and demand cash plus the permanent signing of Gayle.

The club are well within their rights to do that and shouldn’t be bullied by the Premier League side, as has often been the case in situations like this before.

Firstly, Albion are still in a decent financial situation and can’t be forced into a sale in the New Year.

Of course, if this was another 12 months down the line, it could be different, but for now, the Baggies can dig their heels in and get the best deal possible for them, rather than bowing to what Newcastle want to do.

Many might see a straight swap deal as the fairest trade, but really West Brom are well within their rights to demand a fee for a player like Rondon, who cost them a club-record fee back in 2015.

Add to that, he’s cutting it in the Premier League, whilst Gayle is scoring goals in the Championship. It makes complete sense for a player in the top-flight to cost more.

It’s refreshing to see a club take the stance that West Brom have. For far too long the Premier League has bullied the Football League.
