West Bromwich Albion and Swansea City are competing to sign Ben Godfrey, with the Sky Bet Championship rivals weighing up £3m moves for the midfielder.

According to BBC Sport, Swansea are interested in signing Norwich City’s Godfrey, with the midfielder also attracting interest from West Brom, whilst Crystal Palace are interested.

The report claims that all three clubs are weighing up £3m bids for the 20-year-old, who is highly-rated at Norwich.

However, Godfrey has managed just six senior appearances at Carrow Road, with the Canaries letting the midfielder develop in the under-23s and out on-loan.

Last season, Godfrey spent the year out on-loan, linking up with Shrewsbury Town in League One and helping Paul Hurst’s side into promotion contention.

The 20-year-old enjoyed a fine year, making 51 appearances across all competitions, as Shrewsbury finished third in League One.

The Norwich City youngster played every minute of Shrewsbury’s play-off campaign, including 120 minutes of the play-off final.

Unfortunately, Godfrey was unable to help Shrewsbury achieve promotion to the Championship, with Hurst’s side losing 2-1 to Rotherham United at Wembley.

The Verdict

Godfrey has enjoyed a fine year of football with Shrewsbury, and he is going to want to be playing first-team football next season.

His opportunities at Norwich haven’t come yet, which the 20-year-old will be well aware of.

Should Swansea or West Brom make a move for the talented midfielder, they will have to give the player assurances that he will earn a first-team chance.

If that promise comes, Godfrey could be keen on a move.
