West Brom and Aston Villa set for summer transfer battle

Midlands rivals West Brom and Aston Villa are set to face a huge week against one another in the Championship play-off semi finals, and it seems that the next clash between the sides is already on the horizon, in the shape of a summer transfer bidding war.

According to the website Turkish Football, both clubs are set to join the race for 17-year-old Mainz star Erkan Eyibil.

Having scored 27 goals in 47 Under 17s appearances before stepping up to find the net 17 times in 20 appearances for the German side’s Under 19s side, leading some to dub him the “New Mesut Ozil” due to his similar playing style and that both have been in Germany with Turkish ethnicity.

The two Midlands sides will not be alone in their interest in Eyibil, with Premier League sides Newcastle and West Ham, and Turkish clubs Fenerbahce and Besiktas all also thought to be interested in the midfielder, who is reportedly keen on a move to the Premier League.

Eyibil has represented Germany at every level between Under 15s and Under 18s, but is also eligible to play for Turkey.

The 17-year-old is yet to agree an extension to his deal with Mainz, which is set to expire in 12 months time.

The Verdict

As if next weeks play-off semi final didn’t have enough riding on it, this has now emerged as an intriguing subplot amidst everything else.

The offer of Premier League football could be key for either of these sides, and given Eyibil’s undoubted potential, this could be an opportunity that has to be taken quickly, before any bigger sides move in with an offer that the two Midlands clubs are unable to match.
