Aston Villa sealed their progression to Wembley on Tuesday night with a dramatic victory over West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns.

Dean Smith's side entered the game having won the first leg 2-1, but Albion defender Craig Dawson scored a first-half header to cancel out their opponents' lead.

This gave Albion confidence they could secure victory over their Midlands rivals in an electric atmosphere at The Hawthorns, but they were forced to see the game out for penalties when Chris Brunt was dismissed in the 80th minute.

Villa goalkeeper Jed Steer then proved to be the hero for his side as he kept out penalties from Mason Holgate and Ahmed Hegazi to ensure his side's progression.

Baggies' winger Jonathan Leko was called on by manager James Shan for a rare appearance during the extra-time period, but he failed to make any major impact on the game.

The 20-year-old has now shared a post-match message on his Instagram account following just his third Championship appearance of the season:

Leko claims in the message that Shan's side gave everything they had on the night, while insisting he is proud of his team-mates for their efforts.

The Verdict

It was a surprise to see Leko get a run-out last night seeing as he had not even featured in the Baggies' squad during their last six matches.

It is likely his inclusion came about only as a result of Gayle's suspension which saw Jacob Murphy promoted to the starting line-up.

I think Leko could now face an uncertain summer at the club, as he has failed to establish himself this term following his loan spell at Bristol City last season.
