Sheffield United fell to a disappointing League Cup exit last night, losing 4-2 on penalties to Southampton after an entertaining 2-2 draw.

Enda Stevens and Oli McBurnie were on the scoresheet for Slavisa Jokanovic's side, whilst Wes Foderingham produced a quality goalkeeping display, including an impressive save to deny Che Adams.

Ultimately, misses from McBurnie and Rhian Brewster in the shootout cost the Blades, despite Foderingham's best efforts in denying Armando Broja in the decider.

Foderingham was on the end of plenty of praise from Sheffield United supporters post-match, with the goalkeeper reflecting on the evening on Twitter:

Foderingham, 30, has been one of the many goalkeepers Jokanovic has been forced to use this season given the uncertainty that followed Aaron Ramsdale around in the summer.

He's made three appearances in the Championship, alongside featuring in the League Cup. However, Robin Olsen has now come into the league side ahead of him.

After a debut in a 2-2 draw with Preston North End last week, the Swedish international retained Jokanovic's faith in the 3-1 victory over Hull City as the Blades continue to piece their season together after a tough start.

Sheffield United are back in action on Saturday against Derby County, with Foderingham pushing Olsen hard for a starting berth in goal.

The Verdict

Foderingham was very, very good against Southampton in the cup.

He made some really smart saves and was part of a team performance that offered plenty of encouragement.

Jokanovic has a talented squad, there's no denying that. However, it's pointless having depth all over the place without players in form pushing each other.

In goal, he's got Olsen, but also Foderingham pushing him hard and offering food for thought.
