Kevin Phillips has expressed his surprise at the lack of action given to Jake Vokins at Sunderland.
The Southampton full-back completed a loan move to the Stadium Of Light at the end of the January transfer window as he looked to gain valuable first team experience away from the South Coast.
However things have been tough for the 21-year-old who has been limited to just four starts for Lee Johnson’s side.
Opportunities have been limited due to the form of Callum McFadzean, and according to Phillips, it’s a bit of a surprise that he hasn’t had more in the way of first team chances.

Speaking to Football Insider, Phillips said: “I’m surprised he hasn’t set the world alight so far.
“We are not privy to what happens on the training ground so it is hard to say why it hasn’t worked out.
“Coming from Southampton, you thought he would slot into the starting XI straight away. It can take time for some players to adjust and adapt and he is obviously one of them.
“I am sure Vokins’ time will come though. He will get another opportunity between now and the end of the season because he has shown in the past that he is a fantastic player.”
You have to sympathise with Jake Vokins.
The youngster is clearly a talent but with Sunderland performing as well as they have done it’s been tough to find his way into the starting XI.
His chance may come before the end of the season, but if not I’m sure that supporters won’t be complaining if they manage to pull off promotion.
