Middlesbrough announced that club captain Ben Gibson had signed for Premier League side Burnley earlier this week, in a deal worth around £15m.

In a tweet from Ben Gibson, the 25-year-old bid farewell to the club, 13 years after joining their youth academy.

The tweet stated: “The last few days have been the craziest of my life. Leaving the club I have supported, loved, and have had the honour of representing has been the hardest decision I have ever had to make.

“I couldn’t leave without thanking everyone connected with the club – the management, the staff, the players and, of course, you the fans.

Gibson signed a four-year contract at Turf Moor, where he will be vying for a starting spot in the Clarets central defensive positions alongside James Tarkowski and Ben Mee.

With Europa League football to offer, it was too hard for the Middlesbrough youth product to turn down, becoming Burnley’s first signing of the summer.

This is how the Middlesbrough faithful reacted to the open letter on Twitter.
