Oldham Athletic supporters will have been left stunned with the news that Paul Scholes has resigned as manager of the club after just seven games in charge.

The news was confirmed by Sky Sports and there will be many questions raised as to why he has chosen to step away from his role in charge of the League Two club.

The former Manchester United midfielder leaves Oldham 14th in the League Two table and in a poor run of form at the worst possible time.

The role was Scholes' first managerial role in his career and he will surely be contemplating his next move carefully.

In an official statement from Scholes, he admitted he was disappointed to be stepping away from the role but couldn't carry on due to seemingly broken promises.

"In the short period since I took on the role it unfortunately became clear that I would not be able to operate as I intended and was led to believe prior to taking on the role."

Manchester United supporters certainly had something to say on his resignation.
