Sheffield Wednesday will have a look at signing Cardiff City defender Mark McGuinness permanently after his impressive form on loan at the League One club, manager Darren Moore has revealed.

The 21-year-old joined the Owls for the 2022/23 campaign in August and has established himself as one of Moore's first choice centre-backs.

McGuinness has been ever-present in the side in recent weeks and produced an eye-catching in the recent victory over Shrewsbury Town – helping Wednesday keep a clean sheet and scoring the decisive goal.

Yorkshire Live has indicated that Cardiff do have the option of recalling the defender in January but it appears Moore is beginning to think about keeping him permanently and not just for the rest of the season.

When asked about the prospect of making the loanee a full time Wednesday player, the Owls boss hinted that the Hillsborough outfit would take action soon.

He said (via Yorkshire Live): "Yeah we’ll have a look at that.

"We’ve got to respect the parameters of the deal, but let’s have a look. Hopefully, we can do (a deal), but we’ll have some talks with it and we’ll respect the deal in terms of where everyone is at.

"He’s done himself the world of good (against Shrewsbury) with another solid and consistent performance. The icing on the cake for him was to get the goal. He’ll keep going and when the time is right we’ll have a chat and see how both clubs view how the loan is going so far."

Wednesday are back in FA Cup action on Saturday as they host League Two side Mansfield Town in the second round of the competition.

The Verdict

It's good news for the Owls that the club are set to look into a permanent deal for McGuinness soon.

The 21-year-old has been outstanding since joining the club on loan and looks like a player with a really bright future.

It might not be easy to convince Cardiff to let him leave permanently but that would be a really smart bit of business from a Wednesday perspective.

Given there is the chance he could be recalled, just keeping him for the rest of the 2022/23 campaign would represent a positive outcome.
