Sheffield United have been linked with a summer loan move for Manchester City starlet Gavin Bazunu this week, per The Sun.

The Blades, along with Championship rivals Preston North End, are said to be in the running for the 20-year-old, who has impressed on loan at League One outfit Portsmouth this season.

Bazunu has conceded just 45 goals in 42 third tier outings and has kept 16 clean sheets, and the 10-cap Republic of Ireland international is set to take the next step up the EFL pyramid as he continues his development.

Despite Bazunu's obvious abilities and potential, FLW's United fan pundit Owain Wyse does not want the Blades to bring the youngster to Bramall Lane due to the fantastic form of Wes Foderingham this season, and would want any competition for the 31-year-old to arrive on a permanent basis instead.

"I think it's always a good move to sign such a talented player - if we could bring him in permanently," Owain said.

"He'd be a great player to have around and gain experience and improve, however I don't believe he should come in on loan to replace Wes Foderingham.

"Wes has been exceptional this year and I don't see Bazunu as a huge improvement on him.

"Wes has completely transformed the back-line since taking over the goalkeeper position and I believe we should look elsewhere and save some of the wage budget by not bringing Bazunu in."

The Verdict

Bazunu is quite clearly a rising star and like many top level goalkeepers currently, he is learning his craft in the EFL.

He's had two seasons in League One now with Rochdale and Portsmouth, but he's shown enough in that time period to earn a move to the Championship or perhaps a top division in Europe.

Despite his talents, you can understand why Blades fans may think he's not exactly needed at Bramall Lane due to Foderingham's surprise performances this season.

Bazunu though could end up being a different level to Foderingham and if United get the chance to bring him in then they will probably do so.
