Swansea City managed to secure a vital 1-0 win in their play-off semi-final first leg at Barnsley and now they will have to prepare to finish the job in the second leg.

Steve Cooper’s side are aiming to avoid the same frustrations that they suffered in the semi-finals of the play-offs last season against Brentford. They are going to have give their all in the second leg to ensure that they give themselves the best of chance of making it through to the final against either Bournemouth or Brentford at Wembley.

Whatever happens in the play-offs, it has been a promising season for the Swans and Cooper’s side have shown that they have a lot of quality within their squad. There are a lot of players that will have a lot of value in the transfer market and Swansea will be wanting to ensure that they hold on to those players so that they can continue to improve.

With that in mind, we have ranked the top ten players within Swansea’s current squad who feel have the value in the transfer market. It was tough to rank their squad, so see if you agree with our selections and our order…

Before we start this list, it is worth acknowledging that there were a few players who can consider themselves unfortunate to miss out on the top ten here. These most notably include Ryan Manning, Ryan Bennett and Korey Smith and you could have made a case for any of those.

However, kicking off the list in tenth place for us is midfielder Jay Fulton, who makes it into the list ahead of the likes of Smith and Bennett because he is a few years younger than those two players so should have slightly more value. The 27-year-old has perhaps been someone that has gone under the radar this term but he has had a good season.

Fulton was able to make 40 Championship appearances for Swansea in the regular campaign and chipped in with three goals and one assist. He does a very effective job for them in the middle of the park and when he plays is often crucial to the way they go about trying to control matches.

In ninth place for us on this list is defender Jake Bidwell, who deserves his spot here because of the excellent form he has been able to show under Steve Cooper since he made the switch to the Liberty Stadium.

The 28-year-old has had an excellent season for Swansea this term and is a player that for many people will go under the radar. He was able to keep out a player with Manning’s quality on the bench for most of the campaign when the Swans were playing with wing-backs. He has also managed to provide eight assists and scored one goal in his 39 league appearances.

Bidwell was not the most eye-catching signing when he joined the Swans on a free transfer in the summer of 2019 after leaving QPR. There would have been few expecting him to be as good as he has proven to be. The left-back deserves a lot of credit and his stock at the moment should be fairly high given he is in his prime years and has had a good campaign.

Some might feel that Ben Cabango deserves a spot higher in this list than eighth and you could certainly make a case for that given the potential he has and the quality he has already shown. However, at the moment there are a few players ahead of him who have shown more consistently their quality.

Cabango made his breakthrough with Swansea last season in the Championship and was able to help them reach the play-offs making 21 appearances and helping them record six clean sheets in that time. However, this term he has really shown what he can do on a consistent basis, with the 20-year-old managing to make 30 appearances in the regular campaign and helping them keep 12 clean sheets.

The defender should only continue to improve in the next few years working under Cooper, he is a player that will have a lot of potential value to the Welsh club in the transfer window if he continues to make progress and show his quality.

Coming into the list in seventh place is Matt Grimes, with the midfielder having a lot of quality and seemingly one that could very well be able to make the next step up to the Premier League should Swansea manage to get there.

Grimes has been a crucial performer for them in the regular campaign and he managed to make 45 league appearances scoring twice and also providing three assists. His ability on the ball helps to enable the Swans to control games in the middle of the park. He is crucial to the way that Cooper likes his side to build the play into the final third.

The 25-year-old is a player that has attracted previous attention in the transfer market, with Watford having been linked with a move for the midfielder back in the summer of 2020. Having been signed by the Swans from Exeter City for a fee believed to around £1.75 million, he will be worth a lot more than that to them now.

In at sixth place on this list is forward Jamal Lowe, and he has managed to show a lot of development as a player so far this season under Cooper in the Championship.

Lowe was signed by Swansea from Wigan Athletic last summer for a fee reported to be around £800,000 plus potential add-ons. That appears to be something of a bargain for the attacker now after he has been able to show that he can add goals to his game in a more advanced central role than his usual wide position. He chipped in with an impressive tally of 14 goals in the regular campaign.

The 26-year-old is likely to only improve over the next few years and if Cooper persists with him in the more central attacking role he has had this term then he should improve his finishing ability. Lowe will be worth a lot more than what Swansea paid for him now.

In at fifth place on this list is defender Connor Roberts, who is one player within Swansea’s squad that certainly looks like he will be able to progress on to the Premier League regardless of what happens with the Swans’ play-off campaign.

Football League World have already revealed that Swansea are bracing themselves that they might have to lose the defender in the summer if they were to miss out on promotion to the Premier League. The right-wing-back has been integral to Cooper’s sides strong regular campaign in the Championship and he managed to weigh in with an impressive five goals and seven assists.

Roberts is someone that could even perhaps be higher up in this list than he has been placed. That perhaps shows just how much quality there is in their current squad when you factor in the loan players that they have on their books at the moment from Premier League clubs.

Coming into the list in fourth place is the first of three loanees that the Swans have in their current squad that will hold a lot of potential value for their parent clubs. Conor Hourihane has been a magnificent addition for Swansea with him having been signed in the winter window on loan from Aston Villa.

Hourihane is a player that has always been a very quality player in the Championship, with him having fired in eight goals and registered 11 assists in the 2018/19 promotion-winning season with Aston Villa. Following his arrival at the Liberty Stadium, the midfielder managed to score five goals and provide two assists in his 19 league appearances in the regular campaign.

The midfielder has already suggested that he would be willing to make a permanent return to Swansea in the summer transfer window. Even though he is 30-years-old, his form for the Swans will have reminded Villa of his potential value and his value will still be fairly high in the transfer market.

It was very difficult to order the top three players on this list in terms of who would hold the most value in the transfer market. However, in at third place we have gone with Andre Ayew who could have even topped the list if it was not for the fact that he is now 31-years-old.

Ayew was re-signed by Swansea in January 2018 for a fee that was believed to be £18 million rising to £20 million. The forward could not prevent the Swans from being relegated back to the Championship and then spent a year out on loan with Fenerbahçe.

However, at the start of last season, the forward remained with Swansea and has since been able to establish himself as a crucial player. He managed to fire in an impressive tally of 16 goals and seven assists last term, and matched the tally of 16 goals in the regular campaign this term.

He is out of contract in the summer and he has recently suggested he is focusing on their promotion push rather than his potential future. However, there is a chance he could stay if the club earns promotion. Losing him for free would be a major blow because he will still have a lot of value in the transfer market.

If this list was being made in terms of the player with the most potential long-term value in the transfer market within Swansea’s current squad then Marc Guehi would probably come in first place.

However, the defender is only second on this list because he is still maturing as a player and starting to show his potential. Guehi has enjoyed another excellent campaign on loan from Chelsea and he managed to help the Swans record 16 clean sheets in his 40 appearances in the regular season.

It has recently been reported that the 20-year-old is wanting to test himself in the Premier League next term, and a return to Swansea could be possible within that if they do earn promotion. Chelsea are sure to have a player on their hands that is going to be worth a considerable fee if he continues to grow in the next few years as a player.

In our opinion, the most valuable player within Swansea’s current squad in terms of the transfer fee he would likely command if he were sold this coming summer is goalkeeper Freddie Woodman.

Woodman has enjoyed yet another excellent season on loan with Swansea in the Championship this term and he managed to record a highly impressive 20 clean sheets in the regular campaign. The 24-year-old is someone with a very bright long-term future in the game and he looks destined to be a strong performer in the Premier League, be it with Newcastle United or elsewhere.

It has recently been reported that Swansea would be interested in making either a permanent or loan move for him in the summer if they do earn promotion. However, it has also been reported that Newcastle want to keep him in their squad to challenge for their number one position. Woodman’s value will be very high at the moment and his parent club will have to either cash in on him or hand him chances to play you feel.
