A busy summer transfer window could well be on the way for Charlton Athletic with Nigel Adkins wanting to really start shaping his squad into how he wants it to look.

He's had a few months to see what he wants to do with this Charlton side now and with a number of players seeing their contracts coming to an end this summer there's a good chance things are going to look a little different at the start of next season.

With that all in mind, we're taking a look at the ten most valuable players to the club, not just in terms of contract length and market value but in terms of things such as ability, potential and leadership as well as the obviously financial side - whilst we're going to leave the players that have been in on loan out as well given we don't know their futures.

Here are the ten most valuable Charlton players that we believe the club has right now...

Diallang Jaiyesimi is a talented youngster but we just did not see the best of him this season and there will be hope that his potential is what sees him come to the fore next year.

He's a player with a contract past this summer so that adds some value and, as mentioned, he does have quality - he just needs a good run of games to get the most out of it.

It's surely possible we'll see him feature more for Charlton next season with a pre-season under his belt and we'll just have to see how that goes.

Ben Watson has a one-year extension option so if that gets triggered he's obviously not going to be going anywhere this summer.

He's a player with good experience and at this level still has something to offer, even if he did have a few ups and downs over the course of the season.

He's shown he's more than fit enough to play Saturday-Tuesday this year once again despite his advancing years and it would probably make sense to keep him about for another campaign as they go for promotion.

Adam Matthews' contract is up this summer but he seemed to be favoured over Chris Gunter for the right-back spot and so that could well play into his hands in terms of earning a new deal with the Addicks.

Matthews is a decent player at League One level and has also won promotion before with the club so having him around for a big push next season could be a decent enough call.

Time will tell as to what Adkins decides but it did seem as though he liked the right-back a fair deal.

Alex Gilbey could have been outside this top ten had we done it midway through the season so it's testament to the final months he had for Charlton that he is now in this list.

We really saw him come to the fore under Nigel Adkins and if he can keep that up and keep working on things, he could become a leading light for Charlton.

It's probably safe to be a bit cautious with expectations over him but he's got a real high ceiling for what he can do with the club and that's why he's made this list.

Jason Pearce is sixth on our list.

The skipper was out of the team to start the season thanks to injury and then the form of Akin Famewo and Ryan Inniss but as things wore on and injuries hit the latter pair he got back into the side and rather stayed there for most of the campaign.

A man that's been at Charlton for quite a while now, he's certainly seen a lot and he'll be excited about this new era could well bring to the club given things look so much more stable these days - providing he stays.

Chuks Aneke's future is uncertain at the moment and that perhaps stops him from getting any further on the list but there can be no doubting the quality and ability he brings to Charlton.

He's a player that regularly makes an impact either from the start or, more usually, from the bench and if he does leave Charlton this summer his next club could be getting a really decent signing on a free.

Of course, his fitness needs managing but when he's on form he's very hard to stop in League One.

Conor Washington had a really good first season at Charlton with him scoring a good amount of goals and regularly proving a real nuisance for opposing defences.

It was a shame he got injured early on in the Adkins era as he was in great form and having him missing for a few weeks may well have cost Charlton a play-off place.

Anyway, that's all theoretical now and time will just have to tell as to how many goals he's going to score for the club next season.

Jake Forster-Caskey had an excellent year and it's cruel that his season ended with another lengthy injury blow.

It's going to be a while before we see him in a Charlton shirt again and that probably prevents him from getting further up the list.

Even so, his displays this season for the Addicks were more than good enough to get him into the top three and he certainly won the plaudits and accolades from the fans for some of his performances in the middle of the park.

Ryan Inniss could arguably have been number 1 had he not missed most of the season with injury but it's the impact that he did have during his time on the pitch that sees him as high as he is on this list.

He's a defender that wins pretty much ever aerial ball but that can also spray passes to get Charlton from back to front quickly.

Providing he stays fit next season he should be a real hit for Charlton and fans are going to love watching him in the flesh at The Valley.

Ben Amos had a really good season and there's surely going to be a plan for Charlton to try and keep him given how important he is in goal.

He did a fine job of replacing the outgoing Dillon Phillips for this season which says a lot given the performances he put in during the Championship campaign in 2019/20 and now it's all about Charlton making sure they have a good number 1 for next year.

Amos is a dependable 'keeper at this level and one many clubs would like to have in between the sticks.
