Derby County extended their unbeaten league run to five games on Saturday by securing a 2-0 victory over Luton Town at Pride Park.

The Rams, who are currently 13th in the Championship standings, took the lead in the 11th minute of the clash as Matty Pearson diverted the ball into his own net.

Undeterred by this setback, Luton went close to levelling up proceedings on several occasions with James Collins spurning their best opportunity.

Tom Lawrence sealed victory for the Rams in the second-half as his speculative effort sailed past goalkeeper Simon Sluga.

Football League World fan pundit Lisa Howard has suggested that Derby's display against Luton was underwhelming.

"Although the result on Saturday was good, the performance at times was poor.

"I would say we won ugly.

"There were times during the game where our passing was poor, and we sat far too deep, inviting pressure on.

"So yes the result was good, but we need to improve a lot if we are to challenge for the top-six.

"This is a weak league this year, and if you put a string of results together you can climb the standings."

Howard has insisted that the Rams should remain patient with manager Phillip Cocu after a mixed start to the season.

"Cocu has had a difficult start with all that has happened.

"We have only lost two league games, but have drawn far too many.

"The start hasn't been that bad as we are only two points off where Frank Lampard was this time last year.

"Yet we need to improve.

"But I think Cocu will get things right when he has able to improve the squad during the upcoming transfer window."

The Derby fan pundit has suggested that Graham Shinnie could become a key player for the club following his debut against Luton.

"I think that Shinnie will emerge as a good player as he was fantastic on Saturday.

"He brings something that we have been missing in midfield this season.

"As well showing a willingness to get at opposition players, he is also very energetic."
