‘We miss you captain’ – Some Charlton fans reminisce as former player announces retirement

Former England striker Darren Bent announced his retirement from football yesterday, and has taken to Twitter to express a fond memory from his playing career.

In response to a post from Charlton Athletic thanking him for his service to the club, Bent responded that it was an honour to captain the club, sparking much love from the Addicks fans.

The 35-year-old enjoyed successful spells at various clubs throughout his career, but he made a name for himself at The Valley and that was where he enjoyed some of his best goalscoring form, bagging 18 league goals in the 2005/06 season.

That helped the club to a mid-table finish that year, and they haven’t finished higher since, which explains why he is such a popular figure and why he enjoyed his time there so much.

Here are some of the messages of appreciation sent to Bent on Twitter by the Charlton faithful.
