Wigan Athletic have confirmed that centre-back Charlie Mulgrew has had his loan terminated at the club and returns to Blackburn Rovers.

The Scotland international signed for the club at the beginning of the season on-loan for the duration of the campaign and was a key part of Paul Cook’s side as they looked to consolidate their place in the Championship after being promoted back in 2017.

The Latics have been battling against relegation since the start of last season and they have slipped down the table in recent weeks, to the point where they find themselves 23rd, two points adrift of safety.

Mulgrew was signed to be a regular part of the squad but out of 27 league games this season, he has only featured 12 times and last played against Luton back in early December.

While there is no indication on Wigan’s official website about why this loan was terminated, Blackburn Rovers' official site reveals that the decision was made at the player’s request rather than either of the club’s.

The centre-back now leaves the club and returns back to Ewood Park for the rest of the season, leaving Paul Cook with half of January to seek a replacement.
