“We do need to make a few additions” – Wigan Athletic fan pundit issues prediction ahead of Championship campaign

This article is part of Football League World’s ‘Terrace Talk’ series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

FLW’s Wigan Athletic fan pundit Adam Pendlebury believes the club is capable of competing in the top half of the Championship table this season.

The Latics earned promotion from League One last season having clinched the title along the way.

Leam Richardson’s side are now preparing for life in the second tier, and the fan pundit is optimistic that the team can avoid a relegation dogfight.

The supporter is aiming for a mid-table finish between 10th and 14th, which would be a very strong campaign for the club.

He is hopeful that the first team squad can carry the momentum that comes with winning a league title, but has claimed that additions will be needed in order to accomplish these goals.

“I think Wigan Athletic will finish the Championship season 22-23 in mid-table, somewhere between 10th and 14th,” Pendlebury told Football League World.

“I think we will take the momentum from last season into the early stages of the season.

“We have a good, solid squad that I think can definitely compete.

“We do need to make a few additions, but our recruitment over the last 12 months has been excellent so I’m very confident that we will do that.

“There will be the inevitable blip. Clearly there are sides that are much better resourced than Wigan but I don’t believe that we will be fighting relegation at any point this season.”

25 quiz questions about Wigan Athletic managers from over the years that will really test your knowledge

Who was Wigan manager when the club first won promotion to the Premier League?

This will be the club’s first season back in the Championship since 2019-20, when the side finished 23rd in the table, coming just two points behind 21st placed Barnsley.

Richardson will be aiming to lead the team to a better standing in the table come the end of this upcoming season.

The Verdict

This would be a great result for Wigan if they could manage a top half of the table finish.

Even coming 14th would be quite impressive for the side on their return to the Championship.

Most supporters will likely be happy to simply avoid getting sucked into a relegation battle through the campaign.

But additions will be needed to ensure the team is capable of making the leap up the divisions while remaining competitive.
