QPR have kept below the radar in an average season, but Ian Holloway will be wanting to show some signs of ambition in the transfer market in order to excite the fans.

The R's are currently in 15th place with four games remaining and the 4-2 victory over Sheffield Wednesday assured survival.

Realistically 12th is the highest they can finish because they are only three points away.

They have been a side lacking excitement this season, but Holloway has a reputation for the opposite, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see a creative improvement next season with some of that being due to new personnel and the rest coming on the training pitch.

Here are three players who could join in the summer...

McCarthy used to play for QPR. His move to Southampton hasn't gone as he would have liked because his route into the first-team has been blocked by Fraser Forster.

With his current club seriously threatened by relegation, it's highly likely that he will find himself in the Championship next season. Returning to his previous club could help rejuvenate his career in surroundings that he is familiar with. He hasn't received nowhere near enough gametime over the past seasons and moving to Loftus Road could rectify that.

The goalkeeping position is a weak area in the team currently with Alex Smithies playing every game this season. McCarthy could provide some much-needed competition and has the ability to usurp Smithies.

Shackell wouldn't be the most exciting signing. However, he is a free agent in the summer and he adds another option to an area in the squad which isn't the strongest.

Millwall have barely used him this season, since he joined in January, so they are unlikely to try and bring him in which gives Holloway the chance to add some experience and solidity to his team.

Shackell is also used to playing short passing possession based football from his time at Derby, so he is composed on the ball. Therefore, he would be useful if Holloway tries to change their style similar to how he used to set up Blackpool in his time there.

Berahino is another player facing the prospect of relegation with his current club, but his reputation has deteriorated to such a level that there won't be many suitors.

His move to Stoke from West Brom was supposed to rejuvenate his career. Unfortunately, that hasn't transpired as of yet because he is still yet to score for the Potters and only has one assist to his name.

This would be an ambitious move for QPR, but there's a chance that he could be brought in on loan which would suit all parties. It would be a sign of ambition from the board while giving Berahino the chance for a team to be built around him in a league which he should have the quality to dominate.

It would also help Stoke because it would take him off their wage bill which is important if they do get relegated, and he hasn't shown anything to suggest that he will have a miraculous turn of form at the club. This would be a big risk for the Rs, but the potential pay-off for them is huge.
