Ipswich Town must have thought they’d won their first East Anglian derby since 2009 when Luke Chambers headed home in the 89th minute of Sunday’s clash with bitter rivals Norwich City at Carrow Road.
The goal sparked pandemonium on the Town bench as well, with Mick McCarthy’s celebration drawing particular attention.
He burst off the bench and shouted expletives, seemingly in the direction of the travelling Ipswich fans.
Obviously the rift between the former Sunderland boss and the club’s fans has been long-running and well-documented but this was a bizarre new twist – even in the heat of the moment, he looked to be making a pointed message.
McCarthy has moved to issue an apology for his language and has also sought to clarify that he wasn’t aiming it at anywhere or anyone in particular.
Town boss Mick McCarthy has apologised for any offence caused during yesterday’s East Anglian derby. #itfc

Ipswich fans are not necessarily buying it and we have taken a closer look at the best of the reaction…
“I’d like to reiterate though that my comments were not aimed at anyone.” RUBBISH! Whilst the rest of the bench turned to the pitch, MM made a deliberate beeline for the #ITFC fans. If you’re happy with that nonsense @Official_ITFC then good luck selling season tickets.

Yeah right of course he didn't mean it. Club is toxic from top to bottom and I shall never return until Marcus Evan sells the club. He might be good at organising conferences but he's hopeless at running a football club

We don’t want your apologies mick.. just walk away! #itfc

Apologised for telling fans to FO, although demands he didn’t. Time the club regained integrity by removing the unprofessional purveyor of the most dull football the club has ever had to suffer.

Joke of a response – insulting all fans intelligence saying it wasn’t aimed at anyone. Absolute cop out from the club publishing this #mickout

I really like Mick but you must think the fans have no brain. Do not lose another 2000 loyal supporters
We can not go on like this. Call a meeting. Get Mick to address the fans and heal the rift so we can build together
