Bolton Wanderers strengthened their spot in the automatic promotion places in League One after a nerve-racking three points at Oxford United on Tuesday night.

The Trotters dominated play early on in the game and took the lead just four minutes into the first-half.

In-form man Filipe Morais hit home a rebound after forward Gary Madine was denied the goal after a save from the U's goalkeeper.

Then the scorer turned provider as his free-kick was impressively tipped on the bar, but defender Mark Beevers was on hand to convert in the 23rd minute to double the visitors' advantage.

Oxford United ensured to pile the pressure in the second-half with a goal just before the break.

Both Ben Alnwick's and David Wheater's attempts to keep the ball from going in weren't enough as Kane Hemmings was on hand to narrow the gap.

Although it would be Phil Parkinson's team who would get the next goal as a header from defender Cheyenne Dunkley who headed into his own net.

The hosts did once again try to salvage a point with a magnificent free-kick from Chris Maguire, but that wasn't enough as the three points went home with Bolton who grabbed a fourth on the counter in additional time thanks to Josh Vela.
